Be Brave By Carolyn

Be Brave

Hello, Carolyn here with another Design Team Member Featured Tuesday Make.

For this project I used a piece of wood I found whilst out walking my daughter’s dog. Even though I found the piece of wood on the ground in the woods, my immediate thought was beach and driftwood, and that the Seahorse key would be perfect for this project.

As with every project I make, I covered the wood in clear gesso. Next I stencilled using an old Finnabair in my stash and Finnabair 3D Gloss Gel. I did not want to cover the wood with colour so the transparent gloss gel was perfect to add extra texture to the piece. Instead to add a pop of colour I sprayed some cheesecloth with Lindys Starburst spray Tainted Love Teal

I created my focal point in stages. I dug out from my stash some mould pieces I have made. I found a frame and cog where I had not had quite enough resin to fill the mould, bits were missing, perfect for this project. These two pieces were glued together and left to dry. I also dug out the two starfish, covered them both with Lindys Chrome Doesn’t Pay chunky embossing powder. I ‘rusted’ them with Finnabair Liquid Acrylics Burnt Sienna and Tiger Orange.

The frame/cog was now dry and proceeded to colour them with my Finnabair waxes. I started with Rusty Brown matte wax and covered the piece entirely. Then I added touches of Rusty Red matte wax, Patina Green matte wax, Electric Purple metallique wax, Peacock metallique wax, Aged Brass metallique wax and Old Denim metallique wax to add shadow in the open areas of the frame/cog.

The two starfish were a little too silver for my liking so I added Aged Brass and Peacock waxes to tone it down. I also didn’t like seeing the wood through the centre of the frame/cog so I cut a circle from some clear plastic packaging, stencilled with Finnabair Texture Paste Granite and coloured the back with Lindys Moonshadow mist Smoky Sapphire. Still not quite happy I then cut a circle from a piece I had made using a Stamperia texture impresssions mould, coloured with the same Moonshadow mist and Old Denim wax. You can barely see this in the photos, but it is there, and now I was ready to assemble my focal point. Using the 3D Gloss gel I glued everything down, including some pieces of actual rusted metal.

I like to add words to my projects, for me it finishes the project off. I chose Be Brave from the Tim Holtz Quote Chips set and knocked back the white colour with the same waxes I had used on the frame/cog.

Hi, I’m Carolyn, a mother of 2 grown up girls. I have crafted in some form or other since I was a little girl and began my mixed media journey back in 2012. I love rust, the colour teal and finding bits of ‘treasure’ to use in my collage projects.
